Leaders ask questions and inspire a united vision across a team. One definition of CEO is that it's Collective Executive Officer.

Effective leadership is not the same as management.

Randy Komisar suggests that startups need different styles of leadership, typified by different kinds of dog, in this sequence:

1. The Retriever pulls together the core team, product/service and market direction around a coherent vision. Key skills include inventiveness and tenacity.
2. The Bloodhound sniffs out a trail to market and proves the concept. Key skills include company building and a keen sense of direction.
3. The Husky leads a team that is pulling an operating company that's getting heavier and heavier day by day. Key skills include constancy and scalability.

None of these is 'top dog' and it is rare to find the ability to be all three in one person.
